AN UPDATE ON MY iPHONE BATTLE BETWEEN YES OR NO

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Yesterday, my hubby told me to call a couple gadget stores including the Apple Store in Lynnwood, WA to get some information about the release of the iPHONE here in the United States.  Information like what time are they going to release it and as to how many units are they willing to sell.  I got a little more excited thinking that my hubby is as eager as me about the iPHONE.

A couple hours after, he called me from his office saying that he got this email from his brother, Don Joe with stuff about the iPHONE.  The email said that the only network that has been tied up with iPHONE is AT&T.  I am with T-Mobile and I don’t think I like the idea of switching because I have been with T-Mob ever since I came here in the US some two and a half years ago.  I must also say that I like my monthly plan with T-Mob.  You know, my monthly bill is a-ok already plus I have enough free air time and text messages and all the works.

Likewise, a colleague of mine from work said that I should wait for a couple more months before I buy one.  And who knows if by then, the units will be less expensive and it could probably be tied up with my network provider then.

Lastly, a close friend of mine from the Philippines who worked and lived in Japanfor about five years posted an article in Friendster bulletin about the cons of the features of iPHONES written by a Japanese.  And after reading that, it gave me second thoughts about getting an iPHONE immediately.

It won’t probably hurt if I wait.  Maybe after the release, I could get some info from the people who have bought it through the news or via the Net.  Reminding me of this time again, when my hubby bought his Xbox360 on its first release.  After three weeks, his Xbox360 crashed due to overheating.  He sent it over to the service area and they sent him back in return a new unit maybe because the one my hubby had could not be repaired anymore.  That is the problem with gadgets bought on its first release.  The manufacturers might have rushed a little sacrificing the quality just to meet the deadline or the date they promised they will sell it to the public, not seeing the possible concerns that will come up when consumers have bought their products already.

Well, I am just glad for people who have responded to my question before I decide to purchase an iPHONE.  It is a good idea that I have asked their opinions first.  After all, it will cost me an arm and leg if I buy an iPHONE on its first release when in fact, maybe I could get a better deal if I wait a little longer.

iPHONE…SHALL I OR SHALL I NOT?

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

The hubby said its fine if i get an iPHONE.  I have been anticipating for this techie since Jan2007, when it first came out in the news.  For those of you who dont know yet, it is a combination of an iPOD and a cellfone by Apple.

iPHONES will be released on the 29th of June…which means, it is this coming FRIDAY!  And if I decide to buy myself one, I need to get in line on Thurs nite at this Apple Store in Lynnwood, WA.  Last night news said that there might be long lines of people who are going to buy.  I remember when Xbox360 was first available in stores, my hubby was one of the thousands of people who got in line a day before it was released.  (Some people waited in line for like a week).  And I can still picture how elated he was to be able to buy himself that gaming console.  And a couple months after, he traded it with a PS3 because he said it’s a lot better than the Xbox360.  Well that is another story then.

A 5GB iPHONE costs $500 and a 6GB is $600.  I prefer the 6GB one.  I wish it has bigger memory capacity for that price.

I think it is costly.  But I REALLY WANT TO HAVE ONE because I’m an iPOD and a (kind of) cellfone person.  But (again),  part of me is deciding against buying it.  Is it practical if I get one?  I already have a 20GB old iPOD and a 4-month old 30GB video iPOD (courtesy of my bro in-law).  And you know that I’m a mom and there are needs that should be prioritized!  I don’t know.  That’s why I’m posting this bulletin, hit me back with your reply if you want to share your views with me.

Thanks and goodluck on me…

REMEMBERING SANTA CRUZANS IN THE PHILIPPINES

Monday, June 4th, 2007

I received an email from a dear friend of mine, Riki. It was usual email that you get from friends who are far away giving you updates about your other friends and acquiantances. It was an exciting item to read but what really touched my heart was the part where he said that only very few of the people from the neighborhood where we used to live (and where he still lives) joined the Santa Cruzan that was organized annually by my Mother. He also said that this was because our former neighbors said themselves, that it is no longer my Mother who handles the event so they chose not to participate anymore. I was really moved by that.

Santa Cruzan is held in the merry month of May every year in the Philippines. It is a pageant parade joined by beautiful girls and lasses escorted by goodlooking boys and men. Participants of the said parade are usually selected by the community and its leaders. Part of the said parade is a novena procession where the Blessed Virgin Mary’s icons are placed on "carrosas" adorned with flowers and people recite novena prayers, join the rosary, and sing praises. It is definitely one of the very many colorful festivals that the Philippines has.

In our area where me and my folks used to live, our community is under the Santissimo Rosario Parish Church (or what is more known as UST Chapel). Our Parish Church has several communities and each one is headed by someone who has responsiblities for Catholic acts in his/her area and someone who can hold events particularly the ones that concern catholic traditions such as street masses, the moving of the Blessed Virgin Mary from one house to another every week and the offering of flowers and the praying of the novena and the rosary, the celebration of the Parish Church’s feast day, and most especially, the Santa Cruzan. In our area’s case, it was my Mom who was the head herself for six blessed years.

So everytime May came up, my Mom with the help of the rest of our family and some of the neighbors were able to devotedly hold colorful and memorable Santa Cruzans. I say memorable because it is indeed a wonderful experience to be a part of Santa Cruzans - whether you are part of the people who organized it or you are one of the chosen adorable girls and women dressed up in long gowns walking along the streets under flower-decorated bamboo arcs.

As a girl growing up in the 1980’s, I myself were able to participate in Santa Cruzans. I remember my Mom, who was not head of any groups yet, would have me put on long pretty gowns and have me carry fresh flowers, escorted by my very young brother. He was somewhat hesitant to join me in those parades as he did not like wearing the "itchy" barong tagalogs and walking through the nearby streets. There were even times that my Mom would take me to professional studios and have pictures of me taken before I join the parade. And for ten years, I did join Santa Cruzans. I was even "Reyna Elena" for that last time I joined in and was then, escorted by a former beau. Reyna Elena/Queen Helena is the highlight of the parade itself as she was said to be the founder of the Christ’s Cross.

Now that my family has moved to another city and my Mom is no longer part of the Parish Church where she was once an active head, I still cherish how my Mom introduced to me and to my brother one of the very important Catholic traditions and festivities that the Filipinos have. Looking back, I did not know yet the essence of joining the Santa Cruzans. But as i became older and wiser, I realized the value of continuing to do not just family traditions and devotions but also, remembering the prominent people and events that have tremendous impacts why the Philippines is said to be a country with most festivities.

I may be married now and may have migrated to a different place. BUT I will make sure and I will promise my Mom that I will let my daughter experience being a part of Santa Cruzan. I know that with this, I am not only continuing my Mom and myself’s devotion but I am also letting my daughter know our roots and sharing with her as well one of the reasons why being part of this Filipino tradition will contribute to her happy childhood. After all, she was born in the merriest and most beautiful month of the year - May.
